Welcome
to the KCF Website!
Swollen face, mustache, and Nair burns....not how anyone should go to homecoming.
But that was me at my sophomore year homecoming celebration.
OH – MY- GOSH! Talk about embarrassing? Ok, I’m with my boyfriend,
new clothes, hair done….and red splotches from the burns.
Oh sure, I can laugh at it now that my face is back in tact…but
it sure wasn’t funny then.
And guys, I haven't forgot about you. You may not have to worry about Nair burns,
and all the extra hair may be welcoming! But I know there
are concerns of not being able to be social. Having a fistula stuck in your arm, or a PD Catheter in your stomach isn't all
that great for sports. And taking medications that make you
eat and gain weight aren't desirable if you are trying to
stay
in a certain weight class. But one way or another, it's a
small price to pay to stay alive and be able to live life
at full speed later.
So yes, I know EXACTLY what you are
going through. The body changes, the medication, the treatments,
being tired, what seems as no social life,
and just sick of “being different”. But hey, I got through
it…and I know you can too.
KCF specializes in adolescents and young adults from the ages of 12-21 with chronic
kidney disease (Want to know more about pediatric nephrology,
then click here). Here at KCF, we are committed to helping
you through this tough time. I believe that a little help
and real understanding goes a LONG way. I wish I had it when
I was going through it, so now that I have the opportunity,
I’d love to share my experiences and help you along as well.
Please, look through the site. When you are done, I hope you will choose to be
part of the KCF family.
Until then,
Deidra
