What is Coaching?
A Kidney Coach is a specially trained volunteer who will speak with our adolescent
and young adult patients who are experiencing kidney disease.
We do want to emphasize that a kidney coach is NOT a therapist
or psychologist. Coaching rather, is a way of providing support
and helping to set goals for a patient and their family who
currently are dealing with disease or kidney failure. So,
instead of treating or rehabbing a client, we are merely
the ones who make sure - through our support - everyone stays
compliant with their doctors' orders. As part of the coaches'
support, they will be ready to talk with client anytime and
be able to provide support in all stages of kidney failure.
One thing that a coach will do is establish a one-on-one
personal relationship with clients and their immediate
family. By doing this, we have the patient and their
family make
goals and share in the responsibility of staying compliant.
In addition, the coach offers information, guidance, and
support to strengthen clients relationship with their doctors.
We think that it is extremely important to place an emphasis
on the doctor/client relationship, so we will help the
client understand their health issues, and effects of
noncompliance.
